La cabine de Vostok 1 est une sphère 2,3 mètres de diamètre revêtu d’ un scaphandre Gagarine est assis sur un siège
éjectable . L’ air qu’il respire a la même composition que sur Terre.

Les Américains réussissent aussi le lancement , par une énorme fusée Atlas du vaisseau spatial Mercury .
Le 20 février 1962 , John Glenn , installé dans la cabine de Mercury ,fera 3 fois le tour de la Terre en 4h55 min.
Puis pour le retour , les trois rétrofusées freinent la cabine , qui rentre dans l’ atmosphère et se sépare de son bouclier
thermique qui protège la cabine contre l’ échauffement à 6000 màtres de la Terre le premier parachute s’ ouvre .
Puis a 3000 mètre c’ est le tour de second .
Enfin la cabine se pose en mer , John Glenn est récupéré par un navire Américain.

Ce pilote d’ essai a été sélectionne par la Nasa avec 6 autres futurs astronautes pour les vols du projet Mercury.
La cabine est un cône de 22, 7 mètres de haut le diamètre à la base est de est de 1 ,85 mètres .
Glenn a tout juste la place d’ y être assis sur un siège moulé a la forme de son corps.
A l’ arrière de la cabine sont fixées 3 rétrofusées et a l( avant les parachutes .
Vêtu d’ un scaphandre .
Glenn respire de l’ oxygène pur.
